Nudging effectiveness

Nudging works! This is shown by the example of a vacation resort on Gran Canaria. Let yourself be inspired.

Analyses of the effectiveness of communication instruments in Mediterranean resorts showed consistently positive results. A combined use of the instruments such as posters (in the lobby), speech bubbles on the buffet, displays of local products (on the buffet) and table displays in a vacation resort in Gran Canaria had the following proven effects:

  • Increase of the consumption of local food by over 350% per product
  • Reduction of edible plate waste by almost 15%

The most effective information tools were the table displays, which were noticed by almost all guests and read in detail by more than half of them. The buffet bubbles were also noticed by nearly 90 % of the guests, while the poster/banner in the lobby area achieved 70 % guest awareness.)

Good messages are (sample text for “Waste Management”):

Simple

Clear messages, no big numbers, supplement with pictures.

“One third of the food on each plate is wasted – we can prevent 50% of this!”

1

Positive

Positive formulations without a raised forefinger.

“We handle food carefully so that less is wasted.”

2

Honest

Showing commitment and telling the truth.

“Our dishes are freshly prepared, many are cooked in front of the guests.”

3

Connecting

Highlighting common activities and inviting guests to join in.

“United against waste!”
